700 km highway drive in a Maruti Jimny: Sedan owner's observations

My other car is a turbo petrol sedan which I'm used to, but Jimny gives a different kind of driving pleasure.

BHPian Way2Jimny recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Just crossed 1500kms in my Jimny Zeta MT.

Haven't done any mods as of yet except the Geolander 215 tyres.

Had a 700 kms highway drive in a day recently and here are my observations.

  • Jimny's suspension is fantastic. Was pleasantly surprised how it gobbled up bad patches.
  • On 4-lane highways, it has adequate power. It can cruise all day long effortlessly at 100kmph and will still have enough juice for overtakes.
  • Did not push above 100, but at high speeds, I could see the average dropping. 90-100 Kmph is the sweet spot. Expect 13-14 Kmpl with spirited driving.
  • If you maintain below 80 Kmph, can get even better fuel efficiency.
  • Does not feel like an SUV at corners. Maintains composure.
  • The steering feels heavy at higher speeds and maintains control. No vagueness or play at the center. But not much feedback and you cannot feel the road surface.
  • Jimny is at home on 2 lane state highways.
  • It can pull right from 60-100 in 5th Gear. Easy to overtake the state buses and other slow vehicles.
  • You don't need to slow down for sudden bad patches. Just keep driving!

Small kids always take a second look at the Jimny. May be it's like their toy has come to life.

My other car is a turbo petrol sedan which I'm used to, but Jimny gives a different kind of driving pleasure.

It is a no-nonsense lovable little keeper!

Off-roading with my Maruti Jimny: Bent metal and scratched underbody

As soon as I saw this, I called Maruti for an underbelly coating and they quoted Rs 4,500.

BHPian Samba recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I took my Jimny for a brief offroad drive. Just wanted to share this, so that others can be cautious on this.

One of the lowest points in the underbelly of the Jimny is the protruding metal to protect the radial arms.

While crossing a ridge I scraped against a boulder, and the metal part got slightly bent. Of course, it was my fault, I should have been more careful. But such an accident can happen. A guard to protect these, if one is taking the Jimny for regular OTRs, will be recommended.

Though bringing it back in shape was a less than 5 mins job, it is not desirable.

Update

After fixing the above, I went underneath the car for another thorough checkup and found these scratches.

As soon as I saw this, I called up Maruti for an underbelly coating and they quoted Rs 4,500.

I could have gotten it done, but then again I thought, while going for OTRs the underbelly might get scratched again, so best to find a DIY solution for this. Jimny already came with a rubberized coating from the factory. So that was another reason I didn't want to get another underbelly coating right now.

At home, I cleaned the area and applied the filler on it.

Next day, I had a talk with Dbhpain Leoshashi about a good underbelly anti-rust spray can. As we were not sure whether the filler would absorb moisture in the long run or not, so best was to get it painted with a matt black anti-rust spray over it. He recommended the below product from Wurth. I was not getting this product online, so he helped me to get a couple of 500 ml cans.

After applying the filler, I let it dry for a day. Then I sprayed this anti-rust coat thrice from a distance of 30 cm as mentioned on the can. Each coat took 30 to 90 mins to dry depending on the thickness. The end result is more than satisfactory.

At least if the underbelly gets scratched yet again, I can use this spray and get the job done on my own anytime.

New accessories for my Jimny including extensive under-body protection

I also upgraded the car battery and swapped the stock air filter with a K&N performance air filter.

BHPian hemanth.anand recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

This weekend, I added some more accessories to the car.

Installed front and rear recovery points from Swastikfabs.

Both Rear recovery points

Also got the radial arm guards installed. This is probably the lowest point on the car and this needs to be protected.

I later visited Bluegarage.in and added a few more under body protective items like a fuel tank, carbon canister guard and front & rear differential guards.

Actually Bluegarage.in has underbody protective items as a kit that includes 1 Front differential guard, 1 Rear differential guard, 1 Carbon cannister guard, 1 Fuel tank guard, 1 Transfer case guard and 4 radial arm guards. But since I had already got the Transfer case guard and the 4 radial arm guards installed, I chose only the remaining items.

Then I upgraded the battery to a proper DIN series 70AH battery. Swastikfabs has a bolt on attachment to hold the bigger 70Ah battery.

I was looking for a Jimny scale model and getting one in black was difficult. I found a 1/12 scale model that is also a wet tissue holder on Amazon JP website and ordered it. I thought of keeping it on the dash. When it arrived, it was too huge to keep inside a car. But for a tissue case, it's quite detailed and hence I've just kept it as a scale model.

This is an officially licensed product by Suzuki Co., Ltd. The hood is removable to reveal a small compartment that can store keys, etc. Tyres rotates and can be operated by hand.

A rear parcel shelf would've been a good place for this but unfortunately, there's no parcel shelf for the Jimny.

Clocked 10,000 km on my Jimny AT in 4 months: 3rd service & accessories

These days, Maruti service centres do not miss doing one thing - disconnecting the dashcam!

BHPian hemanth.anand recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Last weekend the car crossed 10k kms and earlier this week it went for the 3rd free service.

10k in 4months 2 weeks

I had booked an appointment a couple of days earlier. It was promptly picked up on time, all steps were informed and costs were explained before carrying out the service.

Engine oil, Oil filter and AC filter were replaced. The bill was close to ₹2900.

Service bill

I had mentioned that the driver seat floor mats have no hooks. Over the phone, the service advisor said he'd check. Later he called and said that they had to cut the floor mat and put bolts and install it. By the way, he explained, I wasn't sure if he was talking about the same hook that I was referring to so I told him to keep the hook in the car and I'll get it installed later. So he kept it in the car during delivery. Will get it installed sometime later. I was impressed that this is available as a spare.

Floor mat hooks

Overall, the service experience was satisfactory although the basic waterwash is poor (water stains all over).

Whatever they miss, MSIL service centers these days do not miss one thing… disconnecting the dashcam!

Two weeks ago, I added the transfer lever extender accessory from Swastikfabs. Now, shifting from 4H and 4L is a lot easier. The added 6cm of length gives a leverage which makes it easier to press and pull down the lever. But it doesn't obstruct the driver in any way (at least in my AT). Installation was easy too - remove the 2H-4H-N-4L marking cover on the knob, use an Allen key to remove a small bolt. After the knob is removed, add the extension lever and assemble everything back.

Transfer case lever extender

I also added the radial arm guards.

Additionally, I added this small snorkel cover as an additional protection from dust and water

Maruti Jimny sales tank 78% in Jan 2024; only 163 cars sold

Mahindra sold 6,059 units of the Thar.in January 2024.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny sales have crashed in the first month of 2024, from 730 units in December 2023 to just 163 units last month. That is a drop of 78%.

The Jimny was launched in June 2023. Since then, Maruti has sold 16,369 units of the Jimny. For the first three months, the carmaker sold around 3300 units on average. However, Jimny's sales have been steadily declining since September last year. 2,651 cars were sold during the month of September, which dropped to 1,852 units in October and 1,020 units in November.

The Maruti Jimny goes up against the Mahindra Thar in the Indian market. On average, Mahindra has been selling around 5,473 units of the Thar every month, which is a decent number considering its niche positioning in the market. In January 2024, Mahindra sold 6,059 units of the Thar. That’s 5,896 units more than the Jimny.

Maruti Suzuki introduced the Jimny Thunder Edition in December. Prices were slashed by Rs 2 lakh in a bid to revive sales, which doesn’t seem to have worked given its dismal sales performance in January 2024.

Maruti Jimny: Likes & Dislikes after a 7000+ km trip to Spiti

Power is certainly an issue. Struggled to keep up with the Thars while climbing uphill( we had both petrol and diesel ones in the group)

BHPian jojoinassi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

3 Jimnys and a trip to Spiti

16 days - over 7000 km -13 states and 3 union territories- multiple expressways, NHs, state highways, bad roads, and no roads, from 33 degrees to minus 17 degrees, from sea level to over 15500 feet, loads of dust to black ice- 4 school mates in 3 Jimnys did it all. It was the trip of a lifetime - finding new friendships, and consolidating old ones

Jimny- the good things

Highways- I was vary of its highway performance. But it did unbelievably well. The cruise was set at 90/100/110/120 according to the roads and it did it with ease. ( This highway thing was the revelation of the trip&#128522

Off the road- most of the roads were good on our trip. But wherever there was a bad patch, the vehicle showed its true colours. Could use 4H,4L, and hill descent effectively whenever needed

Extreme cold- at Kaza temperature had dropped to minus 17 at night. Still the next morning it would start with the first crank without a slight hesitation. One of my phones "froze" in that temperature and is still dead. And we human beings were in at least 5-6 layers of clothing inside the homestays and there she was outside with nothing on ( there was a diesel Thar with us which had some DEF issues and an Isuzu which had some problems)

Fuel average- decent figures of 11.2 km/L for 7337 kms covered. Dropped a bit in the hills. Came back during the return drive

During hill ascent and descent, one could change between D, D with od off,2 & L, and literally drive like a manual. And it worked like a charm

Braking in the hills was not at all an issue even at 13000-15500 feet. Clear instructions were given to all drivers to go downhill in either 2 or D with OD off and avoid unnecessary braking on the go.NO brake fade or no other issues with the braking

The not-so-good things

Power is certainly an issue. Struggled to keep up with the Thars while climbing uphill( we had both petrol and diesel ones in the group). But I felt we were not that bad either

Turning radius- is a problem at sharp bends. But not a deal-breaker

The windscreen washer fluid froze in the mornings. Was back to normal by noon. Someone was telling me to add glycol. Does anyone with any solution?

Even though it was so cold and everything frozen, there was no snow. Would've been far better with snow around

The bad things

Braking at high speeds is a nightmare. The only thing is to be vigilant and try to avoid it as far as possible. Learned to do that these days. And once you've to brake at high speeds, it's not confidence-inspiring at all

Once I took it over some black ice at moderate speeds ( unknowingly) and it was scary

Fuel tank is so small. Frequent visits to fuel bunks were a pain in the wrong place. We used to top it up once it reached halfway mark( in the plains)- it was kind of a forced break after a journey of@ 200 km or 2 - 2 1/2 hours

Conclusion

Overall super happy with Jimny. Very wise purchase. Trustworthy, go-anywhere kind of vehicle (good on the road and off it) with a decent price tag. Hope it'll remain in the stable for long for many such expeditions.

PS- will try to add more as I remember.

Gypsy owner buys a Maruti Jimny: Modifications & review after 5k km

"It always was in my Mind to get a better and more comfortable version of the Gypsy which could be used both as a off roader and city car."

BHPian Andyzoom recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

This would be my first post on TeamBHP and I am really excited to write about my Jimny tales.

I was not among the first in the country to book the Jimny when it was launched but being a Gypsy owner and Fan it always was in my mind to get a better and more comfortable version of the Gypsy which could be used both as a off-roader and city car.

There was a huge hype during the booking stage and the enigma around the launch had died down post the introductory pricing was rolled out.

I was enamoured by the looks of the Kinetic Yellow and the small/cute-looking Jimny which had sold 5 Million units worldwide.

One fine Sunday in June 1st week I ended up calling the Nexa dealer and asking for a test drive, as usual, they refused to come over to my house and asked me to visit the showroom. (Very Maruti-like Behaviour). I ended up going and taking the test drive on a red dual-tone Alpha AT. I immediately liked it - after driving the gypsy for many years this was a huge upgrade in terms of the suspension and the interiors. Also, the fact that this vehicle has a million modifications available (Thanks to all the YouTube Videos).
I immediately booked the Alpha AT and asked for the Bluish Black colour. The dealership promised me the next available cancelled vehicle - clearly showing that a lot of customers backed out. I still decided to go ahead.

Post a lot of follow-ups with the dealership in the next few days I was approached by my banker that he could help me get the delivery within 2-3 days and I immediately jumped at the offer.

I got delivery on my Birthday and that was ecstatic for me.

Now that I had sight of the delivery I set my eyes on multiple videos and articles on the modifications and interior add-ons that could be done.

I finalised the below

  • Bottle Holder
  • Rear Defogger Cover
  • Seat Belt Sensor Clip
  • Ladder
  • Snorkel with stainless Steel Assembly along with a rain Cove
  • Arm Rest
  • Premium Cup Holder drivers side
  • Door Lock Magnet Cover
  • Door Pocket Holder
  • AT Transmission Console Box Organised & Bottle Holder
  • ABS Dashboard Tray
  • Wind Booster
  • Iron Man Suspension with 2 Inch Lift Kit
  • Alpha Reisin Differential Breathers
  • Iron Man-Bull Bar
  • Hella 3.2 Fog Lamps installed on the Iron Man Bull Bar
  • Iron Man Winch
  • Stage 1 ECU Remap - to increase the performance
  • Alpha Reisin Recovery Points
  • Seat Covers
  • Yoko Geolanders 215 Tyres

While I have managed to get 90% of the above accessories/modifications done a few of them are yet to be done.

My Feedback on the drive - I have already done more than 5K Kms from the time i have purchased and saw a lot of Positives and some things which I would love to have but are not there

  • The drive is wonderful and the car is quite sound-free.
  • The power is enough for a city drive considering the kind of traffic that we face on a daily basis.
  • The Suspension to my mind is as good if not better than what we experience on the Innova.
  • On Highways the Car is very well behaved just that a little bit more punch to overtake would have been fun.
  • The Off-roading capabilities are amazing and I love the 2 and L functionalities in the AT Model for off-roading.
  • While going uphill the car strains a bit in 4by2 but on moving it to 4H the performance enhancement is really nice.
  • Post the Wind Booster and ECU stage 1 remap the power and pick up has a visible difference and I am really enjoying the Pep in the vehicle.
  • The 2 Inch Lift kit has only enhanced the driving experience and I don't feel any bumps. The rear jumping is also reduced to a great extent.

All in all, I am a very satisfied owner of the Jimny despite knowing the fact that a new one is available at a discount which is considerable in amount.

Maruti lost top position in the Indian SUV market, Mahindra took lead

Maruti’s SUV product portfolio wholesale started to decline during the 2023 festive season, mostly due to the fall in sales of the Jimny and Fronx.

BHPian pqr recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

2023: Maruti lost the #1 SUV rank in just 2 months

After showcasing Fronx and Jimny at the January 2023 Auto Expo, wholesale dispatch of Fronx started in April 2023; this was followed by Jimny in June, and Maruti steadily climbed to the #1 position in the Indian SUV market by July, with a 25% SUV market share.

Maruti was able to retain the #1 position in August as well, with a 24% share; however, from September onwards, Maruti’s SUV product portfolio wholesale started to decline during the festive season, mostly due to the fall in sales of Jimny and Fronx. By November, Maruti’s SUV ranking dropped to #4, just behind Mahindra, Tata, and Hyundai. Besides Brezza AT, every other model carries some discount in December 2023.

With a wider SUV product portfolio and new production capacity going on-stream, Mahindra regained the top spot from Maruti in September, at the beginning of the festive season.

Don't count your chickens until they are hatched.

Source

What is startling is the desperation shown by Maruti in claiming the #1 position in the SUV market through this expensive ad campaign. Which has now gone down the drain.

With Jimny’s positioning fiasco, it's high time for Maruti to do some soul-searching for its SUV product portfolio to achieve sustainability in the long term, as SUV and MUV body styles are only future markets; the rest will diminish over time.

Here's what GTO had to say about the matter:

Surprised to see such loud claims from Maruti when:

  • India moved to SUVs & Maruti completely missed the boat in the initial years. They were late to the party and till date, don't have any SUV / Crossover that we can call the "segment best".
  • They actually have just two SUVs, the Jimny & Grand Vitara Hybrid. The Brezza is really a raised hatchback, while the Fronx....amazing car, but not an SUV.
  • If Maruti wants to continue misleading, why not include the S-Presso too? Maruti has marketed the car as a "Mini SUV".
  • All their SUVs & Crossovers are targeting the lower end of the market or their respective segments. Hardly anything to be proud of.
  • Maruti simply doesn't have a solid product loaded with tech that can match the Creta / Seltos, XUV700, Safari & gang.
  • Fact is, Maruti doesn't know how to engineer a car costing over 15-lakh rupees. They can build you a cheap hatchback or sub-4 meter sedan, but a game-changer SUV for 25-lakh rupees? No knowledge at all. It's like telling a plywood manufacturer to build you a TV.
  • Forget turbo-charged petrol engines, Maruti's biggest motor is a boring 1.5L NA petrol that feels like 1990. Forget dual-clutch ATs or CVTs, Maruti still has an AT gearbox from the 90s on sale. Forget EVs, they had to beg & borrow the hybrid tech from Toyota.
  • Build your R&D capability, Maruti. Else you will have to stay content with hand-me-down tech from Toyota which will come slow, almost like drip-feeding.

Here's what BHPian coldice4u had to say about the matter:

They can make all the claims, all the ads, present all the stats. But that Fronx ain't even remotely an SUV by a very very long shot!

On second thoughts, I  wonder why they did not add the Ignis and S-Presso numbers.

Here's what BHPian bijims had to say about the matter:

Mahindra is the only major player to have true SUVs in the market under a reasonable price band that sell well, the rest don't even offer RWD (whereas Mahindra has cars that offer AWD, 4X4, and Body on-frame chassis). The only exceptions are the Jimny and the Grand Vitara AWD, whose sales are not much to talk about.

When just comparing SUV body style and high ground clearance, every maker has one or the other car in this segment. So Mahindra getting back the crown of number one SUV maker in India is no surprise.

Here's what BHPian Fuldagap had to say about the matter:

I log on to TBHP at least twice daily. Straightaway I click on the "Hot Threads" link and I see at least 2 threads on the Jimny among those. It might not be doing the sales numbers as expected but it sure has been keeping momentum on TBHP.

Maruti cars are no-nonsense cars, fuss-free and after the initial euphoria of owning a new car is over, which in my opinion 3-4 months or so, their products last a lifetime. This seems mostly true for first-time buyers, which are a lot in our country.

Some of their cars are even fun to drive. Ignis or the Swift for example have been perfect for my solo but long drives on Indian roads and weather conditions. Never faced any issues and travelled with zero fear of anything going wrong or the associated aftermath if anything does go wrong.

The Ertiga was never to my liking but once I drove it many years back, it was a clear winner for long drives with a bunch of people.

A probable Ignis with 4x4 can take on most tarmacs on long drives is what I have always felt. Spectacular little car.

A 2nd additional car in the family or in somebody's garage might or might not be a Maruti but the masses still bank upon their products.

I wish Maruti one day is able to break the 15 lakh price barrier and change its perceived image among people in general. To maintain the number one spot in terms of sales for so many decades is a feat quite difficult to manage even for much bigger companies than Maruti. I am sure the R&D and associated management must be on their toes all the time to give the country the current line up of their products.

I never thought that they would launch the Jimny for real anytime here but they did, even if it was too late as per enthusiasts' hopes. It possibly marks a change in their perception of the market today and maybe just maybe we would see better SUVs here in the future from them.

Whether the Toyota-Maruti partnership makes up for a good or bad case study a decade from now is yet to be seen. Homegrown companies like Tata are giving the much deserved flavour to the market not to mention stiff competition to Maruti in almost all segments.
