Want to buy a Harrier diesel in NCR but am unsure due to 10-year rule

I really like the Harrier diesel but am in a dilemma. The other option that I've shortlisted is the Mahindra XUV700 AX7 petrol.

I am in a quandary and need your input.

I am a huge fan of Harrier and want to buy it, but getting a diesel car in NCR is making me think about it. I want to use the car for an extended period and the forceful stop at 10 years is not helping.

My choice is Harrier XZ and XUV700 AX7 Petrol.

I don't drive a lot. Need a car for daily use and a bit of highway drive. With year-end discounts from Tata, XZ is coming to be cheaper than AX7.

So wondering if I should go for Harrier and forget the 10-year constraint OR be a nice guy and wait for XUV700 in the queue?

Unless your usage is very high - high enough to justify a diesel - I would say no for Delhi-NCR. Now there are proper hybrids too which match the lower running costs of a diesel. No BS6 problems (DPF choking etc.). Lastly, owning a petrol might work out cheaper in the longer run, versus selling a diesel at the 10-year mark in Delhi-NCR & then shelling out big money for a replacement.

Today's cars are very well-built and even at the 9-10 year mark, it hurts to be forced to sell them. Many BHPians & a few friends have had to bid tearful goodbyes to their perfectly fine 10-year-old diesels in Delhi-NCR.

Do the math properly. Go with diesel only if your running justifies it or if the vehicle / segment justifies it (e.g. Tucson & Fortuner both have superior diesels than petrol). In your case, I don't think it does, hence stick with petrol. As an added bonus, the XUV700 has a superb turbo-petrol engine.

Steer clear of diesels, brother!

Between the 10-year limit, your low running, DPF issues with primarily urban usage and the way the resale value of diesel cars in NCR is tanking after 5-6 years, there is no logic that can justify the choice of a diesel car in your scenario.

Consider something like a VW Virtus 1.5 or the upcoming facelifted Creta/Seltos or the MG Hector if you want a family cruiser. Or the hybrid City if you want something different and extremely hi-tech. Or perhaps even the petrol XUV700.

I understand that NCR has a 10-year ban policy but you really seem to love Harrier so much so that your username has Harrier in it.

A car is a big and many times aspirational purchase. If you really love Harrier I think you should go for it but be what may don’t go for a manual variant. You can definitely get a car which might be a logical choice per se but every time you look at the car that your heart wanted you might think “kash…”.

On the other side, as others before me have pointed out, there are certain negatives associated with a diesel car. If you aren’t in a hurry maybe you can wait for Harrier’s petrol variant to launch which is set to launch soon enough then you can get Harrier and get a petrol variant as well.

I was in the same dilemma earlier this year and bought Tucson Diesel over Thar Petrol.

My running is 500 kms per month and petrol suited fine but I let my heart rule over the head because we live only once. Moreover, this is the last era of good diesels so enjoy.

It's a heart-over-head call so go for the heart.
