VW recalls 3.24 lakh cars in India over emissions scandal

The Volkswagen Group has announced a recall for approximately 3,23,700 cars in India. The recalled cars include models from Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi fitted with EA 189 diesel engines.

As per the records of the Volkswagen Group, from 2008 till the end of November 2015, approximately 198,500 cars from Volkswagen, 88,700 cars from Skoda and 36,500 cars from Audi across various models sold in India have been equipped with the EA 189 engines which include 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines.

Investigations by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) revealed that there were significant variations between the laboratory test figures and the actual on-road emission levels of cars equipped with these engines.

Volkswagen will present the technical released solution to Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI. The owners of the affected vehicles will be informed by the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group after the solutions are approved by the authorities. Modifications will be carried out to the cars at no cost to the customers.
