Volvo safety demo gone wrong

View Forum Discussion

Volvo’s reputation has always been defined by the fact that it is a safe car maker. However, any car is only as good as its weakest link i.e. the driver. Recently, a video showing a safety demonstration in the Dominican Republic go wrong emerged on the internet. The video in question, shows a Volvo XC60 run over at least two on lookers.

Initial reports indicated that the incident took place after the car’s pedestrian detection system failed. However, Volvo issued a clarification on the incident, stating this wasn’t a demonstration of the “Self-Driving” or “Self-Parking” technology. The car in question was not equipped with the pedestrian detection technology and the accident was a result of the driver’s error.

The car was equipped with “City Safety” – an autonomous emergency braking system that works at low speeds. The technology is part of standard equipment on Volvos, but can be overridden by factors such as acceleration inputs. The people hit by the vehicle reportedly sustained some injuries, but fortunately there were no lives lost.
