Michael Mayer, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, has indicated that the Volkswagen Polo GTI models are on their way to India from the company's production facility in Spain. This indicates that the GTI is expected to be launched in the country soon, with deliveries starting from December. Number of GTI cars available for the Indian market will be limited.
The Polo GTI was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo in Greater Noida. It has also been spotted testing on public roads multiple times. While the model showcased at the Auto Expo was a 3-door version, a 5-door iteration has also been spotted. It remains to be seen which one of these two will be brought to the country. While a 3-door GTI will add an exclusivity factor to the car and will significantly differentiate it from the regular Polo, the 5-door version would obviously be a bit more practical.
The Polo GTI is powered by a 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine which is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG gearbox. This mill churns out around 189 BHP. According to the automaker, it takes under 7 seconds for the GTI to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.
With the aforementioned output figures, the Polo GTI will be placed in the territory of the Fiat Abarth 595 Competizione and the new Mini Cooper S. However, it will come at a slightly lower price tag of around Rs. 25 lakh.
