Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan snapped undisguised!

Volkswagen's first stab at the compact sedan segment will be with the Polo hatchback-based Ameo. The German automaker officially confirmed the car's name and released a teaser image yesterday, and now, the Ameo's rear end has been snapped sans camouflage.

As expected, the car looks like the Vento underwent a chop-job, and while the side profile (including the wheel design) is similar to the Vento's, the rear end is differentiated with the new tail lights. Like the Vento, the Ameo also has reflectors integrated into the rear bumper, but the sub-4 metre sedan drops the chrome strips on the bumper and boot-lid. Minor styling changes to the front grille and front bumper can be expected as well, in order to differentiate it from the Vento better.

The interior features a black and beige colour theme like the Polo and the overall design and feature list will be shared with the Polo as well. The Ameo is expected to use the same engines as the Polo, including a 1.2-litre petrol unit and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Polo's 5-speed manual gearbox is likely to be carried over as well.

The Ameo has been designed specifically for the Indian car market and VW will be hoping to grab as many eyeballs as possible when the Ameo makes its public debut at the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi next month. The compact sedan space does offer a lot of potential, but can be a tough nut to crack given the immense competition involved. The segment leading Maruti Dzire alone dwarfs the sales of VW in India, and Volkswagen will heavily bank on the Ameo to increase its market share.
