Volkswagen aims to become world's largest EV maker by 2025

The German carmaker, currently has an EV line-up which accounts for just 3 percent of its total global sales.

Volkswagen is aiming to establish itself as the 'world's largest EV maker' by 2025 - a title currently held by Tesla.

According to a media report, the company stated that it expects half of its global sales to come from battery-electric vehicles by 2030. The German carmaker, aiming to overtake Tesla, currently has an EV line-up which accounts for just 3 per cent of its total global sales.

Reports suggested that Volkswagen will be setting up six battery production facilities in Europe by 2030. The company has partnered with China's Gotion High-Tech for its planned Salzgitter factory in Germany. The carmaker is now looking at Spain for its next battery plant location.

The new strategy is said to be in line with the brand's electrification plans for Europe announced last month. According to the new strategy, Volkswagen will offer a 100 per cent EV lineup in Europe by 2035, followed by the Chinese and USA markets at a slightly later stage.

Volkswagen will also be debuting its new platform, developed specifically for its future electric vehicles. This new EV architecture is said to debut in 2026 on the brand's successor to the A8 saloon.
