USA: Next-gen Toyota Camry Spotted testing

The next-gen Toyota Camry has been spotted testing in the USA. The all-new Camry is currently under development at Toyota's R&D facility in Michigan. The global premiere of the new Camry is expected to take place next year, while it is scheduled to go on sale in 2018.

The test mule snapped in the spy images is wearing heavy camouflage that effectively hides all design elements and character lines of the body.

The front of the new Camry appears to be inspired by that of the current-gen model, especially due to the pointed grille outline that is visible from above the camouflage. The rear profile suggests that designers have given a steeper slope to the roof, while the trunk is shorter than that of the current-gen model.

The new Camry will be built on the TNGA (Toyota's New Global Architecture) platform, which also underpins the latest Prius hybrid. This would mean that the 2017 Camry is likely to be lighter than the outgoing model. It is also likely to boast of higher rigidity.

Engine options haven't yet been revealed, but the base model is expected to get a 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine, while higher variants might get a 2.0-litre, turbocharged mill. A hybrid powertrain too could be added at a later stage.
