USA: JD Power ranks Honda near bottom in new car reliability

Honda, which was placed 19th last year, has dropped down to 28th in 2021.

JD Power has released the results of its 2021 US Vehicle Dependability Study. The study reveals that automakers have improved their dependability rankings compared to the previous years. However, one brand which hasn't improved, is Honda.

The study reveals a list of the top 33 most dependable car brands in the USA. Honda, which was placed 19th last year, has dropped down to 28th in 2021. The Japanese car brand sits between Volvo and Volkswagen with a score of 145 PP100 (problems per 100).

Honda's Japanese counterparts, however, are at the top of the list with Lexus securing the top spot as the 'most dependable brand' for 2021. Toyota came in fourth on the list scoring 96 PP100, which is still well above the industry average of 121 PP100.

While Lexus took the title of the most dependable brand, the Porsche 911 was the 'most dependable model'. Porsche even secured the second position in the brand rankings with 96 PP100 - losing out to Lexus by just 5 points.

Kia recorded one of the biggest jumps, with a reduction of 35 PP100 to secure the third position. The South Korean carmaker ranked the highest among mass-market brands.

The study also states that vehicle dependability is at an all-time high. As per reports, the overall problems cited by owners has declined by 10 per cent compared to a year ago. The 2021 study is based on the responses from over 33,000 original owners after three years of ownership (2018 model-year vehicles). The study has been fielded from July to November 2020.
