An undisguised test mule of the Perodua Axia with Malaysian registration plates has been spotted in Mumbai. The source of the spy shots claims that there was some testing equipment onboard the car. Since the Axia is essentially a rebadged Daihatsu Ayla, it is possible that Toyota has either started testing components of the car in Indian conditions or is just carrying out some global tests on the vehicle. Recent reports have already indicated that Toyota is all set to bring the Daihatsu brand to India.
In the Malaysian market, the Perodua Axia is powered by a 998 cc DOHC engine that churns out around 66 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 90 Nm @ 3,600 rpm. This engine is offered with two transmission options - a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The Axia boasts of a company claimed fuel economy figure of 21.6 km/l.
With these specifications, the Daihatsu Ayla will probably be a competitor to the Maruti Celerio, WagonR, and the Tata Tiago. It remains to be seen whether this small car will be brought to India and whether it will come under the Toyota brand name or with a Daihatsu badge.
