Following the ban imposed on it in Delhi and some other cities in India, taxi hailing app Uber has announced five new measures in an attempt to make their services safer.
Here's a quick look at the safety measures:
- Police verification - All driver-partners of Uber will have to go through a police verification process.
- Document verification - A local team will be established to detect fraud, verify and authenticate the driver-partners' documents.
- Background checks - Local and global agents will evaluate and implement a background screening solution for the driver-partners.
- Incident response team - A local and dedicated customer support centre will be established to resolve critical issues with the driver and customer community.
- In-app safety features - The Uber app will get a ShareMyETA button, which allows the customer to send his/her complete trip details (including live GPS tracking, driver photo, name and vehicle license no.) to his/her friends.
The ban on Uber is a consequence of the unfortunate rape of a 27-year old executive in New Delhi by the driver of an Uber cab earlier this month. The Union Government had advised all states and union territories to ensure that all web-based taxi services are stopped.
