Toyota Innova Crysta to get 2.7-litre petrol engine

Toyota has disclosed that it is working on a new petrol engine in the Innova Crysta for Indian market. The company plans to launch the Innova Crysta petrol in India by Diwali this year.

Toyota sells the Innova Crysta with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in Thailand. This engine produces 134 BHP @ 5,600 rpm and 182 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.

For India, Toyota's R&D engineers in Japan are developing a 2.7-litre unit. In the Middle East, the Innova Crysta is available with a 2.7-litre petrol engine that puts out 162 BHP @ 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The vehicle comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota used to sell a petrol version of the Innova in the years gone by. Weak demand for the car forced the company to discontinue the engine. With the ban on registration of cars with diesel engines larger than 2,000cc in New Delhi, Toyota has not been able to sell the MPV in the region since December 2015. This has made the company reconsider a petrol power plant for the car.
