Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept unveiled

Toyota has showcased the GR Supra Racing Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The name has been officially used after a gap of 16 years, since the last-gen Supra was discontinued back in 2002. The concept will also be featured in the 2018 Gran Turismo Sport video game.

The concept is a front engine, rear wheel drive two door car that measures 4,574 mm in length, 2,048 mm in width and 1,230 mm in height. The wheelbase of the car is 2,470 mm. According to the company, the car gets lightweight composite materials including widened front and rear bumpers, front splitter and rear diffuser, side skirts, door mirror housings, rear wing and a hood with intakes. It also gets a '90' decal on the doors, which is a reference to the code name for the 5th-gen Supra (A90). The windshield and side windows are made from plastic. The car also gets OE components for the lowered suspension, BBS racing wheels with centre-nut and Michelin racing tyres.

On the inside, the car gets track specific components including a full roll cage, racing driver's seat with harness, quick release steering wheel with paddle shifts, carbon fibre panels on the doors and a racing display. It also comes equipped with fire extinguishers, as well as competition standard brake lines, pedals, battery and wiring harness. Toyota has not revealed the details of the engine as of now.

The Supra was first introduced in 1978 (code A40) with further model changes in 1981 (A60), 1986 (A70) and 1993 (A80). The production was stopped in 2002. The 4th generation Supra was known for its participation in motorsports including All-Japan GT racing, American IMSA sports car racing in 1980s and the Le Mans in 1990s.
