Toyota has been working on simulated manual transmissions for its future EVs for a while now, with the technology being showcased on a Lexus prototype last year. Now, according to reports, Toyota could bring the simulated manual gearbox tech on its future models, as early as 2026.
Future EV models from Toyota will come with a clutch pedal and a gear shift lever and work in a similar way as that of a traditional ICE-powered model. This includes all the sounds associated with engine revs and gear shifts. The tech even goes to the extent of stalling the vehicle if the clutch is not engaged properly.
Reports though suggest that the simulated manual gearbox could be reserved exclusively for the performance models from Toyota's Gazoo Racing division.
Toyota also recently announced that it is working on its next-generation battery packs, which could offer anywhere between 1000 - 1500 km of range on a single charge. These EV batteries will also offer larger energy storage capacities, while also reducing charging times by up to 40%.
