Tata Prima multi-axle trucks to launch in Q1 FY2017

Tata Motors is looking to introduce its Prima range in the multi-axle truck segment in India. This segment commands nearly 65% of truck sales in the country.

Ravi Pisharody, Executive Director of Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors, told ET Auto that the company is looking to bringing the Prima range in the 3-axle segment in the April-June 2017 quarter. While Tata does have multi-axle trucks in the Prima LX range, the Prima range is available only in the tractor-trailer and tipper segments.

The Prima range, which was launched in 2008, is Tata's flagship offering. Its truck racing championship has positively impacted the brand's appeal. As of today, this range enjoys 15% share in the company's sales (in the segments it is present).

The company is also ramping up production of the 5.9-litre Cummins common rail engine from 500-600 units to 1,000 units per month. Also, the 49 tonne tractor-trailers have seen a rise in demand from 200-300 units to 500 units per month.
