Tata, Hyundai to supply 250 Nexon EVs, Kona Electrics to EESL

Tata Motors and Hyundai have secured orders from Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for the supply of 250 electric vehicles. This number includes 150 units of the Nexon EV and 100 units of the Kona electric SUV.

This procurement will utilize Rs. 5 million from the grant recently provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). EESL has received financing from ADB towards the cost of scaling up and financing high priority areas like Demand Side Energy Efficiency Sector Projects.

EESL will procure 150 units of the Tata Nexon at Rs. 14.86 lakh each (Rs. 13,000 cheaper than its ex-showroom price of INR 14.99 lakh). The Hyundai Kona, which offers a higher range, will be procured at an 11% lower price of Rs. 21.36 lakh and with a standard three-year warranty. These electric vehicles will replace the existing fleet of petrol and diesel vehicles of the Central and State Governments.

EESL has already received an order for 300 Long Range EVs from The Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT), Kerala, which is to be supplied in the initial phase.

The Tata Nexon EV uses a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor which has an output of 127 BHP and 245 Nm. The company claims that the car can do a 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.9 seconds. The battery is said to have an ARAI-certified maximum range of over 312 km on a single charge (MIDC cycle). It has fast charging capability and can be charged to 80% of its capacity using a DC fast charger in 1 hour. Using a standard AC charger, it takes 8-9 hours to charge to 100%.

Last month, Tata rolled out the 1,000th Nexon EV from its Pune manufacturing facility.

The Hyundai Kona Electric comes with a 39.2 kWh battery that powers an electric motor that has an output of 134 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. It has four driving modes - Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport and comes with paddle shifters for adjusting regenerative braking. The claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 9.7 seconds.

The car has an ARAI certified range of 452 km on a single charge. The carmaker claims that the battery can be recharged to 100% in 6 hours and 10 minutes using an AC charger. It takes 57 minutes to recharge the battery to 80% of its capacity using a DC charger.
