Sixth-gen Volkswagen Polo unveiled in Berlin

Volkswagen has unveiled the new-gen Polo in Berlin. This marks the introduction of the sixth-generation model under the Polo nameplate.

The sixth-gen VW Polo is based on the company's MQB A0 platform. In terms of design, the front gets a pair of slim headlight assemblies, which can be opted with full LED illumination. There aren't any aggressive character lines running around the body, though the bonnet and door panels do get a couple of character lines to neutralize the car's boxy proportions.

The new Polo has grown in dimension as compared to the previous model. The new car is 4,053 mm in length, 1,751 mm in width and 1,446 mm in height. This marks an increment of 81 mm and 63 mm in the length and width of the car, respectively. However, the height has been slightly reduced by 7 mm. Wheelbase of the new Polo spans 2,564 mm, which is 94 mm longer than that of the previous model. The boot space has also been increased from 280 litres to 381 litres.

In the international markets, powertrain options on offer with the new Polo include four petrol and a diesel engine. The petrol options include a 1.0-litre MPI naturally aspirated unit available in two states of tune - 64 BHP and 73 BHP, a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged powerplant producing 93 BHP or 113 BHP, a 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol rated at 148 BHP and the range-topping 197 BHP 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol mill that will be available with the Polo GTI. Meanwhile, the diesel will be a 1.6-litre TDI turbocharged unit that can be opted in two states of tune - 80 BHP or 95 BHP.

Volkswagen has also added various driver assistance features like Front Assist area monitoring system with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring. Moreover, there are some optional features on offer as well, like adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane change system with rear traffic alert and semi-automated park assist. Another major highlight of the new Polo is the Active Info Display digital instrument cluster, which will be available only as an option.

The new Polo will also be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. An India launch of the new-gen Polo doesn't appear to be in the pipeline, especially in the foreseeable future.
