Segway to end production on July 15, 2020

According to a media report, Segway will be ending production of the Segway PT (Personal Transporter) on July 15, 2020. 21 employees will be laid off from its factory in Bedford, New Hampshire, USA.

Segway PT, a two-wheeled self-balancing electric scooter was launched in December 2001 and was aimed at personal usage for short distance commutes. However, it was pretty expensive and is said to have been priced at US$ 4,950 at launch. Prices have only gone up.

China-based Ninebot bought Segway in 2015. According to the report, in 2019, Segway PT accounted for 1.5% of Ninebot's revenue.

It is said that since 2001, 1,40,000 PTs have been sold. In June 2020, Mumbai Police inducted 50 Segways into the fleet for patrolling.
