The next generation Land Rover Defender has been spotted testing in India for the first time. The test mule was seen on the streets of Bangalore.

Last month, Land Rover said that the next generation Defender prototypes had completed 1.2 million km of testing. The next phase of road trials could be carried out in India.

Like the original, the new Defender is expected to feature boxy exterior styling with short front and rear overhangs. The car seen here is the short wheelbase, 3-door version. However, a 5-door version is also in the works. This particular test mule doesn't have a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.

The new Defender is reported to be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine and is likely to get all-wheel drive with differential locks and other off-roading hardware. Petrol variants could also be offered. The SUV could be revealed later this year.
