Rumour: Nissan could bring more SUVs to India

Japanese carmaker, Nissan has had a fair bit of success with the Terrano in the Indian market. This has prompted the company to start thinking about expanding its SUV line-up in the country.

Nissan has a vast number of SUVs in its global line-up with different sizes, engines and constructions. The Juke, Rogue, Qashqai and X-Trail are expected to be considered for the Indian market.

It may be remembered that Nissan had been selling the X-Trail in India for a while. However, poor sales of the vehicle forced the company to withdraw it from the market earlier this year. One of the reasons for the X-Trails poor performance was its price. The car was brought to India through the CBU route and as a result, attracted maximum import duty.

This time Nissan is giving a serious thought to local assembly of its products, which will allow the company to keep their prices down. Nissan believes that it has the capacity, engineering and capability to assemble its SUVs locally.

The compact SUV segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the India. If Nissan plans to become a major player, this is the segment that it will have to target.
