Rumour: Maruti Suzuki YRA hatchback derived from Ciaz sedan

Japanese automaker Suzuki has been developing a hatchback (codenamed YRA) that is likely to be positioned above the Swift. In our previous report we had put up images of a test mule of the car. Rumours in the international media suggest that the YRA could be based on the recently launched Ciaz sedan. A couple of renderings of the hatchback have surfaced on the internet giving us an idea of how the production-ready car could look like.

While the test mule does resemble the rendering, there is no confirmation that it is indeed derived from the Ciaz. Sharing the platform and part will have its advantages for Suzuki. The company will be able to keep it costs down and price the car competitively.

The YRA is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre, turbocharged petrol power plant that puts out 90 bhp and can average 20 km/l. The company could also use the 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel units from the sedan.

In India, the YRA is expected to be launched in the second half of 2015 and will compete in the B+ segment with the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo.
