Rumour: Hyundai & Kia SUVs could get 1.5L turbo-petrol engine

The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine offered in the Creta, Seltos and Carens may not comply with the upcoming emission norms.

Phase II of the BS6 emission regulations will be introduced in April 2023. It will bring in new RDE norms that are expected to force some carmakers to make changes to their engine line-up. If recent reports are to be believed, Hyundai and Kia could be among them.

Rumours suggest that the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine currently offered in the Creta, Seltos and Carens may not comply with the upcoming emission norms and could be replaced with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit in India. Apparently, the Creta prototype that was believed to be testing a CNG kit, was actually a test mule for the new 1.5-litre engine.

While technical details of the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine are yet to be revealed, reports suggest that it could develop around 158 BHP and 260 Nm. It is also said that Hyundai / Kia is likely to pair it with manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

If the reports are true, then the Creta, Seltos and Carens could benefit from a much more powerful turbo-petrol engine. However, we will have to take it with a pinch of salt until a formal announcement is made.
