Rumour: BMW working on hydrogen fuel-cell X7

According to a media report, BMW is working on a hydrogen fuel-cell X7. It could be launched in 2023, when the X7 facelift is due. The report suggests that BMW has been working with Toyota on hydrogen fuel-cells for the past 6 years.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is said to be too expensive to be used in mainstream cars and hence BMW could be looking to introduce it only in the flagship X7. The report states that the hydrogen-powered X7 could be sold as a 5-seater. Depending on the demand, fuel-cell variants of other models could be introduced in 2025.

At the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW showcased the i Hydrogen Next concept, which is a hydrogen-powered variant of the X5 SUV. BMW is also expected to launch an electric version of the X7, called the iX7. On the other hand, Toyota is also working on the second-generation Mirai FCEV.
