Replacing entire driveshaft assembly on my Hycross' 1st ever service

Faulty driveshaft on a new "Toyota", essentially known for its bulletproof reliability. And it's not even a one-off.

Greetings everyone,

I have had the pleasure of owning a September 2023 Innova Hycross VX (a buying and initial ownership experience post I intend to post really soon), and I have recently run into an issue with the car.

There was a minor metal-to-metal clinking sound audible when the car moved from a standstill. Initially, I did not pay much attention to this, but then the sound became more intense and frequent. It started to sound like something is going to fall from beneath the car below the hood.

The car was due for its first annual service as it had run about 10,200 km. I thought this would be a good time to get the car serviced and simultaneously checked for this issue. The servicing went smoothly however the issue was diagnosed by the service team at Lakozy Toyota in Mumbai. They identified the issue to be a faulty axle for which they needed to replace the entire driveshaft assembly. It has now been about two weeks since they identified the issue and ordered the parts but still, there is no information on the availability of the parts at Toyota. The service advisor has been telling me that the parts are not available in either of Toyota's warehouses ie. Pune and Bengaluru. He tells me it is safe to drive the car till the parts arrive and that it would not affect the car negatively in any way whatsoever. However, I'm not willing to risk it. I'm also made aware of the fact that there are a couple of other Innova Hycross also waiting at their workshop for this same particular replacement.

This car was being used by my father as his daily driver, and he being a senior citizen with a healthy body finds it difficult to move in and out of any other car that we own. The Innova is absolutely ideal for him in terms of ingress and egress essentially causing major inconvenience to him.

This has made me question a few things...

Faulty driveshaft on a new "Toyota", essentially known for its bulletproof reliability. And it's not even a one-off, apparently, there are other cars too facing the same issue.

  1. How do they not have parts available for a car they are selling in good numbers? They are not even able to provide an ETA for the availability of the parts.
  2. This also makes me question the long-term reliability of the car seeing it run into trouble so early in its life.
  3. Has anyone else on this forum also faced this issue or is dealing with the same?
