Volkswagen has unveiled the Polo-based compact SUV called the T-Cross. Three market-specific variations of the T-Cross were revealed simultaneously in Amsterdam, Shanghai and Sau Paulo.
The Volkswagen T-Cross is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform. It measures 4,110 mm in overall length and has a wheelbase of 2,560 mm. The sliding rear seat can be adjusted by 140 mm. As a result, the luggage compartment can hold between 385 and 455 litres. With the seat backs folded down, the T-Cross offers 1,281 litres of luggage space.
The T-Cross features a chrome grille flanked by wraparound headlamps that have integrated L-shaped DRLs. The dual-tone front bumper houses square fog lamp pods. At the rear, the T-Cross has C-shaped tail lights with a dark tint and light bar that stretches across the tail gate. The dual-tone rear bumper has a silver insert and houses a set of reflectors. The compact SUV has roof rails, rear spoiler and ORVMs with integrated turn signals.
The T-Cross comes with black interiors. The dashboard has a textured trim and silver inserts. The centre console houses a touchscreen infotainment system. It has a 3-spoke multi-function steering and a digital instrument cluster.
The new T-Cross is offered with a choice of four engines - 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 94 BHP or 114 BHP, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo petrol unit with 148 BHP and a 1.6-litre, turbo diesel which produces 94 BHP of peak power.
Volkswagen offers a list of standard safety equipment on the T-Cross. It comes with Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System, Lane Assist, Hill Start Assist, proactive occupant protection system and Blind Spot Detection with Rear Traffic Alert. Driver Alert System, automatic adaptive cruise control and Park Assist are available as options.
The T-Cross is expected to arrive in India sometime around 2020. The India-spec car is likely to be based on the low-cost MQB-A0 platform and it might also get a different name to differentiate it from other products.
