Now government claims VW did not violate emission norms

The transport ministry of the Government of India claims that Volkswagen did not flout emission norms.

In November, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) had investigated and found significant variations between the laboratory test figures and the actual on-road emission levels of Volkswagen cars. On this, the government had issued a notice to the company asking it to provide technical inputs and to explain its position on the issue.

Volkswagen had denied flouting any emission norms. The government has also said that there has been no evidence of violation of emission norms by the company and is planning to ask the ARAI if any violations were found.

The government is not planning to take any action against Volkswagen unless it is established that emission norms have been violated.

Earlier this month, Volkswagen had recalled about 3,23,700 cars in India. The company claims that there was no defeat device used in these cars and it had taken this step only to update its EA 189 diesel engines.
