The Nissan Skyline is one of the most popular & oldest nameplates in the auto industry, dating back to 1957. Now, according to a media report, Nissan is said to have frozen development of the Skyline sedan; instead, the Skyline nameplate could be used on a future electric SUV.
The reports suggest that Nissan is developing the next-generation Skyline based on the electric Ariya crossover platform. The Skyline e-SUV could debut sometime in 2025 and come with over 450 BHP with either a twin or quad electric motor setup.
The Nissan Skyline EV will be sold in the US market, but could be restyled as an Infiniti. Reports, however, don't mention anything about the performance-oriented GT-R version of the Skyline.
Nissan though, isn't the first carmaker to re-use a popular nameplate for a SUV. Toyota recently announced that its upcoming Crown will adopt an SUV body style, replacing the sedan. The reason for the change in body style is due to popularity of SUVs across the globe.
