The National Green Tribunal has sent a notice to the Government of India asking it to ban the manufacture and sale of Volkswagen cars in India. Saloni Ailawadi, a Delhi-based school teacher, has sought directions to disallow "manufacturing, assembly and sale" of vehicles manufactured by the Volkswagen group until they are proven to meet emission norms in India.

Volkswagen cars were found to be flouting the prescribed emission norms in the country due  to which, the German manufacturer has had to recall about 3.24 lakh diesel cars of the Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi makes.

In the notice issued to the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Central Pollution Control Board and the Volkswagen Group, the NGT has asked for a reply by December 23.
