Next-gen EV to look like ICE cars, says VW design boss

Apart from the exterior design, Mindt is also said to be working on improving the car's interiors.

According to reports, Volkswagen's design chief Andreas Mindt has stated that the brand's next-generation electric vehicles "will not look like EVs", but will be designed just like cars with internal combustion engines.

Speaking at an interview, Mindt stated, "Everyone believes a short hood and long windshields should be the design for electric cars, but it's not." He added that people don't need to be convinced about EVs hence, there is no need to offer artificial things and "be over-keen". Mindt adamantly said, Volkswagen will "just make it good, make it fit, and it will work."

While Volkswagen's current lineup of EVs has a unique design, the design chief claimed they were done to appeal to "early adopters". Volkswagen's new design language was previewed via its ID.2all concept - a Polo-sized car, whose production version could be named ID.2. Talking about the ID.2all concept, Mindt confirmed that this is the kind of stance VW is working towards for the whole portfolio.

Apart from the exterior design, Mindt is also said to be working on improving the car's interiors. VW has previously stated its aim to get back to offering physical controls and buttons on its future cars.

Andreas Mindt started working with the Volkswagen Group in 1996. He has been credited for designing the exteriors of the first-gen Tiguan and the seventh-gen Golf. He then moved to Audi in 2014, before being promoted to Bentley's design chief in 2021. Mindt is responsible for designing the highly limited Bentley Mulliner Batur Coupe, each of which has a price tag of $2.88 million.
