Next-gen Apple CarPlay revealed ahead of debut

The latest iteration of the Apple CarPlay will debut on the new models from Aston Martin & Porsche.

Apple has revealed the next-generation iteration of its CarPlay connectivity feature. The new-gen Apple CarPlay was first showcased at the 2022 WWDC event, with the tech now finally ready to roll out onto production vehicles.

The new-gen CarPlay comes with a bunch of new features and customisation options. This includes personalising the car's onboard displays, adjusting climate settings, drive modes and driver-assistance functions. It also allows carmakers to design the OS based on the vehicle's specifications - this means a carmaker can specifically showcase the number of seats and the climate zones in a car.

The new-gen Apple CarPlay will also be more connected to the car, allowing for a wider range of notifications on both the instrument and infotainment displays. This includes tyre-pressure warnings, inclinometers, off-road and performance gauges.

Tanya Kancheva, Engineer at Apple’s Car Experience division, stated, "Cars have changed a lot since CarPlay first launched [in the Ferrari FF in 2014], with larger screens and with more features. People love bringing their favourite features from the iPhone into the car with CarPlay. iPhone users have the choice to use CarPlay or this next generation of CarPlay that provides content for all the driver’s screens."

The latest iteration of the Apple CarPlay will debut on the new models from Aston Martin & Porsche, expected later this year.
