New-gen Audi Q7 recalled over airbag issue

Audi has issued a voluntary recall of the new-gen Q7 SUV in the United States. This decision has been taken to fix a software issue with the airbag control module. The said recall will reportedly affect 14,535 Q7s in the US. Models manufactured between August 30, 2015, and May 8, 2016 have been identified to have the aforementioned software bug.

According to Audi, a software issue in the Q7's airbag control module can cause improper airbag behaviour in a crash. In some cases, the front airbags can deploy with a much larger force, which can in turn cause serious injuries to the occupants.

Audi was notified of a potential fault in the Q7's airbag mechanism in March 2016. An accident report brought out the issue by claiming that the airbags of the affected vehicle did not deploy in accordance with the correct impact scenario. Since this was a major breach in customer safety, Audi called for a recall after developing a software update that will fix the said issue.

It remains to be seen whether the above stated recall eventually affects the models sold in India or not.
