Mercedes to quit DTM and enter Formula E in 2019

Mercedes-Benz is set to enter Formula E in 2019 with its own EQ branded single-seater race car. Mercedes will exit DTM (German touring car series) at the end of 2018 after a presence of 18 years to focus on Formula 1 and Formula E.

Single-seater electric car racing is slowly gaining popularity with major car brands. Jaguar and Audi have already been racing in Formula E while Renault has been the most successful team with 15 wins. Meanwhile, BMW has been a partner of the sport since its inception and has been supplying the BMW i8 as the safety car and BMW i3 as the medical and course cars. They plan to enter competitive racing as a factory team in 2018.

Mercedes had entered into an agreement with Formula E back in October 2016, hinting a possible entry into the all-electric car racing series. Mercedes have been dominating Formula 1 since 2014. They will continue to be a part of F1 at least until 2020.
