Mercedes-Benz rolls out locally assembled GLA 200 CDI

Mercedes-Benz India has increased the annual production capacity at its Chakan plant to 20,000 units. The total investment in the manufacturing facility stands over Rs. 1,000 crores since inception.

The company has also started the local assembly of the diesel variant of the GLA-Class crossover, which was introduced in India in September 2014. The locally assembled GLA 200 CDI Style is priced at Rs. 31.31 lakh and GLA 200 CDI Sport at Rs. 34.25 lakh (all prices ex-showroom Pune). 

The GLA 200 CDI production involves the use of latest synchronized conveyor systems and PLC control units for all equipment which provide adaptability with different models on common production lines, thus increasing the flexibility of the production.

The Chakan facility uses technology enabled processes like EMS-Transfer, production lines with controllers, X-road for dynamic testing and programming of cars, frequency controlled measurements for accuracy, shower testing cabin for simulation of real rain test, high pressure jets and dynamic movement of cars, etc.

The GLA 200 CDI is powered by 2,143cc and produces 134 bhp @ 3600-4400 rpm and 300 Nm of torque @ 1600-3000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Mercedes-Benz claims that the car can go from 0-100 kph in 9.9 seconds, achieve a top speed of 205 kph and return 17.9 kpl.

Mercedes-Benz now assembles six models in India - S-Class, E-Class, C-Class, M-Class, GL-Class and the GLA.
