Maruti's growing importance for parent Suzuki has evolved over the past few years. From holding a key role in manufacturing and sales, Maruti is now becoming a larger player in the development of new cars as well, with the Maruti Vitara Brezza being the first example. Now, it looks like Maruti's engineers could lead the development of 3-4 new models, out of the 15 new vehicle launches expected from Maruti Suzuki by 2020.
Sources say the move is part of Suzuki Motor Corporation’s (SMC) vision of MSIL shouldering more responsibility in developing India-specific products while the parent focuses on high-end technology, though such plans have not been officially confirmed.
In order to reduce developmental costs and the time taken, the new products will be based on existing Suzuki platforms and engines. The 15 new product launches planned over the next 4 years will warrant an investment of around $1 billion and the cars will primarily be based on three platforms.
Maruti's new R&D centre in Rohtak which is being developed at a cost of around Rs. 2500 crore will play a key role in the development of these new products. The centre includes a new test track and will have facilities for emission and safety testing as well.
