Maruti Suzuki YY8 mid-size electric SUV details leaked

The Maruti YY8 electric SUV is expected to take on the Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Maruti Suzuki may have the highest market share among all carmakers in India, but it is yet to enter the electric vehicle segment. That is likely to change come 2025 when India's biggest carmaker is likely to debut its first all-electric mid-size SUV.

According to a media report, Maruti's mid-size electric SUV (codenamed: YY8) is being jointly developed with Toyota. The SUV will be based on the 27PL 'skateboard' platform, derived from Toyota's 40PL architecture that is designed specifically for EVs. It is rumoured to be wider and will have a longer wheelbase than the Hyundai Creta.

The report states that the new platform will support both two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The base variant could be offered with a 136 BHP electric motor paired with a 48 kWh battery pack offering a range of around 400 km. The all-wheel-drive version could get a 168 BHP electric motor and a 59 kWh battery pack. The larger battery is expected to offer a maximum range of around 500 km.

The YY8 electric SUV is likely to be manufactured at Suzuki's Gujarat plant. It will also use made-in-India battery packs. The company is also said to have plans to export to other markets.
