Maruti Suzuki will likely equip the upcoming Ignis hatchback with a CVT gearbox. Automatic hatchbacks have become a popular trend in the Indian market, especially because of the dense traffic conditions prevalent in major cities. As a result, Maruti Suzuki has added an automatic option on most of its products. While the entry-level cars get AMT units, the more premium products are coupled to a CVT gearbox.
Once launched, the Maruti Ignis will be sold through the company's premium dealership, NEXA. The step to offer a CVT unit with the Ignis is similar to what Maruti did with the Baleno hatchback, which is also sold through the NEXA dealerships.
The Ignis was unveiled as a production-ready concept at the 2016 Auto Expo, and is expected to be powered by the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines. These engines will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a CVT automatic option will be offered with the petrol trim.
The Maruti Ignis will launch in India around the festive season this year. The company will also reportedly be using its Gujarat manufacturing plant as a global production hub for the Ignis.
