Maruti ships 7.2 lakh vehicles by railways in 5 years

The increased use of railways to ship vehicles has helped offset over 3,200 MT of CO2 emissions.

Maruti Suzuki has announced that it has transported over 7.2 lakh vehicles using Indian Railways in the last 5 years.

In 2020-21, more than 1.8 lakh units were transported by railway, making it the highest-ever railway dispatch by the carmaker. It accounted for nearly 13% of total sales in the same period. In 2016-17, this figure was just 88,000 units.

According to the company, the increased use of railways to ship vehicles has helped offset over 3,200 MT of CO2 emissions, cumulatively.

Indian Railways' Research Design and Standard’s Organization (RSDO) has developed a new twin-deck rake to transport vehicles. It has a capacity of 265 cars. Over 1.4 lakh Maruti Suzuki cars were transported through these rakes.

The rakes were further developed to improve the carrying capacity by 20%. These high-speed and high-capacity rakes can carry up to 318 cars and can be operated at speeds of 95 km/h.
