Many countries allow usage of Indian driving licences

According to a media report, to attract Indian tourists, many countries are now allowing the usage of Indian driving licences.

To be eligible to drive, tourists must have a driving licence issued in English or should carry an English translation of the same. In countries like France, a French translation of the licence should be carried.

Countries like Australia have started campaigns to draw self-drive tourists and this has led to new specialized self-drive tour operators springing up.

However, there are a number of restrictions in place. Most countries allow Indians to drive for up to 1 year with their driving licence and some countries impose restrictions on the type of vehicle used. There are also restrictions on the location of the drive. For example, Indian licence holders cannot drive in the Northern Territory in Australia.

US, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are becoming popular destinations for self-drive holidays for Indian tourists.
