Mahindra's S101 to get 1.2L petrol and diesel engines

Mahindra's upcoming compact utility vehicle offering - S101 has been captured on camera on several occasions while performing its test runs.

There have been various speculations on the possible power-trains of this vehicle in the past. We had reported that a new petrol engine is being readied for this vehicle. However, now, MotorOctane confirms that Mahindra will add a new 1.2 liter, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engine to the S101. These motors are said to produce 80 BHP and are derived from 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder Ssangyong units that power the Tivoli. The report goes on to suggest that the diesel unit will be mated to a 5-speed manual and an automated manual transmission.

Our previous reports, indicate that this vehicle will have a 3+3 seating configuration and a dash-mounted gear lever, among others.

After the failure of the Quanto, the S101 is a more serious attempt by Mahindra to take on the Ford EcoSport, the existing 'cross' vehicles as well as Maruti's upcoming YBA.
