Having finally unveiled the 2020 Mahindra Thar, the carmaker is now said to be mulling a 5-door variant. Initially, the Thar will be offered as a 3-door model, but we can expect a 5-door variant in the coming years.
Ever since it was introduced in the Indian market in 2010, as a replacement for the MM540, the Thar has always been offered in a 3-door body style. Therefore, it will be the first time that the popular off-roader will be offered in a more practical 5-door version.
The new-gen Thar retains its retro looks but gets a new grille that may not be to everyone's liking. Therefore, it is said that Mahindra will offer its traditional 7-slat grille as an aftermarket accessory.
Insider reports suggest that the SUV could be priced between Rs. 9.5 - 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
The new Thar has a slightly better ride compared to the old model, as we found out during our first drive. It also has a much improved interior with better plastics and creature comforts. Adding a pair of doors would make the Thar more usable, especially when it comes to rear seat accessibility. Having said that, it will increase the overall wheelbase of the vehicle, which would affect its off-road capabilities.
The new Thar is based on the Gen3 chassis. It is available with two engine options, which include a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol that produces 150 BHP and 320 Nm and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130 BHP and 320 Nm. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, while Four-wheel drive with a manual shift transfer case is standard across all variants.
The 2020 Thar will be launched on October 2, 2020.
