Hyundai's new hybrid SUV to slot between Alcazar & Tucson

The Hyundai Ni1i hybrid SUV will be aimed at 3-row SUVs like the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700.

According to a media report, Hyundai is developing a new hybrid SUV for the Indian market. It will be positioned between the Alcazar and Tucson and is expected to go on sale in 24 to 30 months.

Hyundai’s new hybrid SUV (codenamed: Ni1i) will be among the first models to be manufactured at the brand’s newly acquired General Motors plant in Talegaon, near Pune. It will be targeted at 3-row SUVs like the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700. The carmaker plans to build around 50,000 units annually.

Reports suggest that the Ni1i hybrid SUV is expected to be slightly longer than the Tucson. It has also been speculated that it could be based on the Tucson LWB currently sold in China.

The new Ni1i SUV will use a petrol-hybrid powertrain, details of which are still unclear. Rumours suggest that Hyundai might plonk a 1.6-litre hybrid into its upcoming C-segment SUV. This engine is currently available in the Tucson sold in the international market.
