Hyundai Tucson FCEV owner receives a $113,000 repair bill

Hyundai stated that the carmaker only ever sold 1000 hydrogen-powered Tucson SUVs.

According to a media report, Till Westberg - a Hyundai ix35 (Tucson) owner from Germany, recently received a massive repair bill after his fuel-cell-powered Tucson stopped working.

Westberg reportedly purchased the FCEV for $50,000 and over the course of seven years, clocked over 52,000 miles with the car. However, the Tucson FCEV recently stopped working, requiring the entire fuel cell system to be changed. With the car out of warranty, Westberg was handed over a bill of $113,000 to get the car back to driving condition.

Hyundai stated that the carmaker only ever sold 1000 hydrogen-powered Tucson SUVs. The low number of sales, combined with the now-outdated hydrogen fuel cell technology, makes the cost of repairs a massively expensive affair.

Considering Westberg is one of the early adopters of the FCEV technology, reports state that "Hyundai is pursuing whether it can accommodate him with an alternative solution." However, there is no information on what the "alternative solution" could be, but it is said that Hyundai could replace his Tucson with a newer FCEV product.
