Hyundai India is planning to introduce mild-hybrid technology in some of its cars by 2017. If this plan does materialise, Hyundai will be the third manufacturer in the Indian market to have mild hybrids in its portfolio, with Maruti Suzuki's SHVS and Mahindra's Micro Hybrid being the first two.
Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai India, YK Koo, has reportedly pointed towards the roll out of mild hybrid technology in the portfolio by 2017, which will first be equipped in the company's mid-size cars. Through the introduction of these mild hybrids, Hyundai is aiming to benefit from the Government of India's FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles in India) initiative, which gives excise relief and various tax benefits to manufacturers of hybrid and electric cars.
The company has not revealed any plans for the introduction of a full hybrid in the near future, though Mr Koo has claimed that Hyundai has the technology and expertise to introduce a full hybrid car, if the market demands it.
