Hyundai developing virtual DCT gearbox for EVs

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N with the new virtual DCT is expected to offer a similar in-car experience as that of the i30 N.

Hyundai has become the latest car brand which is said to be working on developing a fake transmission system for its electric vehicles.

According to reports, the South Korean carmaker is said to be working on a virtual dual-clutch transmission (DCT), dubbed "N e-shift", which will debut on Hyundai's upcoming high-performance EV - the Ioniq 5 N. The virtual DCT is said to be part of the N brand's RN22e concept - a 'rolling lab' for future tech development.

The N e-shift technology is said to replicate the overall feel of a DCT unit in a petrol-powered N model. The technology will get paddle shifters which not only match the upshift and downshift action but also mirror the engine revs right up to the rev limiter, via speakers. Hyundai aims to bring the sound and paddle shifter action of the N e-shift as close as possible to that of the DCT in the i30 N. Albert Biermann, Hyundai Executive Technical Advisor also stated that the N e-shift tech should be able to deliver the same jolt & downshift vibrations as experienced on any of the brand's ICE-powered N cars.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N with the new virtual DCT is expected to offer a similar in-car experience as that of the i30 N, this includes the pops and crackle sounds via external speakers. Biermann calls it the VGS mode (Virtual Grin Shift) and can be engaged by pressing a button on the steering wheel & then pulling both paddles simultaneously. The tech is currently in the stage of being fine-tuned with more features still being added.

Apart from Hyundai, Toyota/Lexus is also said to be working on offering its EVs with a fake manual transmission. The new manual gearbox tech from Toyota will be offered on Lexus EVs & other premium EV models in the brand's lineup.
