Harley-Davidson decides to wrap up India business

Harley-Davidson has decided to wrap up its India business as part of its restructuring plan.

The company plans to close its manufacturing facility in Bawal, Haryana. The bike maker also plans to reduce the size of its sales office in Gurgaon. However, the company has stated that its dealer network will continue to serve customers through the contract term.

According to an earlier report, Harley-Davidson plans to reduce its product portfolio by 30%. The company has also retrenched about 500 positions globally. Some workers at its assembly facility in India are also said to have been laid off.

The total costs associated with Harley-Davidson's restructuring plan, also known as 'The Rewire' strategy, amount to $169 million this year.

Harley-Davidson sales have taken a hit in recent times. In India, the company sold just 106 units from April to June 2020. That's a decline of 87%, while exports are said to have gone down by 40% to 229 units.
