Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, has announced that the government has cleared the use of GPS-based toll collection system in India.
The system will replace conventional toll booths in next 2 years, making traffic movement more seamless. With the new system, the government expects toll income to increase to Rs. 1,34,000 crore.
How will the GPS-based toll collection system work?
All vehicles will have a GPS device that will be linked directly to the bank account of the vehicle owner. The toll amount will be deducted based on the movement of the vehicle.
Gadkari stated that all new commercial vehicles already come equipped with vehicle tracking systems, the government will have to come up with a plan to install GPS technology in old vehicles.
