Goa-based company to build amphibious vehicles

A company based in Goa, will start manufacturing amphibious vehicles in India. Amphibious Designs India Pvt. Ltd. (ADI) is collaborating with Automobile Corporation of Goa Ltd. (ACGL) to build vehicles that can run on land as well as water. The company is planning to initially supply vehicles to the tourism sector. Later, it intends to cater to commercial state transport, central government projects and emergency rescue areas.

ADI plans to deliver its first two vehicles in the month of May 2015. To build these vehicles, the company sourced 80% of the parts from the domestic market. Technology is sourced from its partners in the US. These partners manufacture vehicles and supply them to various markets around the world such as Japan, China and USA.

This is not the first time an Indian company is venturing into the amphibious vehicle market. Tata Motors displayed an armoured amphibious vehicle called the Kestrel at the 2014 Defence Expo. The Kestrel is an 8x8 vehicle with independent suspension. It has a crew of two and can accommodate up to 10 troops. It is claimed to be capable of travelling cross-country and can reach a speed of 105 kph on the road.
