General Motors CEO, Chairman to meet PM of India

Top officials of General Motors (GM), the world's second largest carmaker, will visit India in September.

A report by Financial Express states that GM CEO Mary Barra, Chairman Tim Solso and head of international operations Stefan Jacoby will be attending the Annual Convention of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), where they will interact with members of the domestic auto industry. The trio will also meet the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Mary Barra, who is a career GM executive with 34 years at the company and the first female global CEO of a major global carmaker, will be the keynote speaker at the SIAM convention, which is scheduled to be held on September 12.

The presence of the top brass of a global auto major at the SIAM convention signifies the growing importance of the Indian automobile market. The market, which has seen a decline for two years, has been showing signs of a revival ever since the new Government came to power.

GM however, has not managed to put up any impressive show. While some of its models are ageing and unable to stand up to the competition, others have been unappealing to customers. With Modi asking manufacturers to make India a manufacturing hub, the meeting is expected to result in some big announcements.
