Ford to launch Mustang Hybrid in 2020

Ford Motor Company has confirmed that it will be introducing a hybrid variant of the Mustang sportscar, which will go on sale in the North American markets by 2020. While this news might put off a few hard-core muscle car fans, Ford claims that the Hybrid Mustang will boast of better performance than the current gasoline-powered model.

No official details about the powertrain setup of the Mustang Hybrid have yet been revealed, though the automaker has confirmed that it will be using a turbocharged engine. Media reports suggest that Ford might employ the 2.3-litre turbocharged inline-4 engine for the hybrid model. In its pure gasoline state, this engine churns out 306 BHP and 434 Nm of torque. Ford claims that the Mustang Hybrid will be able to deliver "V8 power and even more low-end torque”.

The decision to launch a Mustang Hybrid is a part of Ford's plans to introduce 13 hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles within a span of 5 years. Other Ford vehicles taking the hybrid route include the F-150 pick-up and the Transit van. Through these hybrid vehicles, Ford aims to reduce emissions and improve fuel-efficiency of its vehicles. The company will also be introducing a full-electric SUV with a claimed range of 300 miles (around 483 km).
