Ford Figo earns 0 stars in updated Latin NCAP crash test

Latin NCAP has tested the Ford Figo (hatch and sedan versions) under the new crash test protocols. The same Figo which scored 4 stars in 2015 was awarded 0 stars this time.

The Figo, sold as the Ka in Latin America, was subjected to an additional side impact test. The test revealed that the occupants could suffer high levels of chest injury and hence was given a 0-star rating. It however did manage to score 3 stars for child occupant safety.

The crash test video reveals that the Figo offers little side impact protection. Both front and rear doors were dislodged from the frame with the rear door opening - further risking the safety of the occupants. The video shows that the passenger compartment was compromised resulting in high levels of chest injuries. As the car lacked side airbags, there were no side impact energy absorbents and no pelvis energy absorption elements in the doors or doorpads. However, as the B pillar was compromised, even the addition of side airbags won't guarantee the safety of occupants.

The car was also subjected to a frontal crash test. Here, the Figo performed slightly better than the side impact test. However, chest and thigh protection for the driver and passenger was found to be marginal.

The test car was equipped with driver and passenger airbags, but did not have side or curtain airbags. Other safety features included seat belt pretensioners, ISOFIX anchorages, ABS and ESC.
